SE end of Meek Channel, Argentine Islands (q.v.), Graham Coast, was charted by BGLE in 1935 as two islands forming a rough L-shape and named descriptively Corner Islands (Rymill, 1938b; BA chart 3213, 7.ii.1947; APC, 1955, p.7). Islas de Corner (Rymill and others, 1943, map facing p.72). Archîpel Corner (Rouch, 1944, map p.11). Isla Corner (Argentina. MM, 1953, p.291). Islas Corner (Argentina. MM, 1957b, p.9; Chile. IHA, 1974, p.84). Islotes del Rincón [=corner islets] (Argentina. MM, 1957b, p.9). Islas del Rincón (Argentina. MM, 1960a, p.10; Pierrou, 1970, p.624). Fueron cartografiadas en 1935 por la Expedición Antártica Británica de 1934-1937, al mando de John Rymill, quien le dio este nombre, seguramente porque la costa N de ambas islas forma una esquina (Corner) o ángulo de unos 60 grados. En una publicación chilena de 1962 figuró como isla Corner, sólo la más occidental de ambas. Dos islas pequeñas, apenas separadas por una angostura de 10 metros, ubicadas entre isla Galindez e isla Uruguay, en las islas Argentine, frente a la costa occidental de la península Tierra de O'Higgins. |
