off N entrance of Lemaire Channel, Graham Coast, was photographed from the air by FIDASE, 1956-57; so called because the island lies near the entrance of Nimrod Passage which provides an alternative route for southbound ships, when Lemaire Channel is blocked by ice (APC, 1959a, p.5; BA chart 3572, 12.viii.1960). Islotes Detour (Chile. DNH chart 1502, 1962; IHA, 1974, p.101).

Island lying 2.5 mi W of False Cape Renard, on the W side of Lemaire Channel in the Wilhelm Archipelago. First charted by the FrAE under Charcot, 1903-05. So named by the UK-APC in 1959 because the island lies near the entrance to the ships' passage W of Booth Island which provides an alternative route to Lemaire Channel when the latter is blocked by ice.

El nombre aparece en cartas chilenas del año 1962 y se ha mantenido hasta ahora. Corresponden a una cadena de islotes que se extienden por 11 cables de E a W, que emergen a 8 cables al N del islote Rothschild, costa occidental de la península Tierra de O'Higgins.
