between Anvers Island and Wiencke Island, was charted by FAE, 1903-05, and named Île Doumer after Paul Doumer (1857-1932), French statesman and President of the Chamber of Deputies, 1905, who helped to finance FAE; President of France, 1931-32 (Charcot, 1906b, p.viii, 279; Gourdon, 1908, end map). Wiencke Island, in error (Ferguson, 1921, map p.46). The island was further charted by DI in 1927. Doumer Island (BA chart 3213, 14.i.1929; APC, 1955, p.9; BAS 250P sheet SQ 19-20/3, 1-DOS 1979). Island 4.5 mi long and 2 mi wide, surmounted by a snow-covered pyramidal peak, 515 m, lying between the S portions of Anvers Island and Wiencke Island in the Palmer Archipelago. First seen by the BelgAE, 1897-99, under Gerlache. Resighted and charted by the FrAE, 1903-05, under Charcot, who named it for Paul Doumer, President of the Chamber of Deputies and later President of France. |

Fue descubierta por la Expedición Antártica Belga de 1897-1899, al mando del teniente Adrien de Gerlache, y fue posteriormente visitada y cartografiada por la Expedición Antártica Francesa en 1903-1905 al mando del Dr. Charcot, quien le colocó este nombre por Paul Doumer, presidente de la Cámara de Diputados y posteriormente de Francia. Isla de 4 millas de largo por 2 de ancho en la cual se destaca un pico piramidal cubierto de nieve de 508 metros de altura, se encuentra situada en la porción S de isla Anvers e isla Wiencke en el archipiélago de Palmer. Su extremo occidental lo forma el cabo Kemp, sobre el que realza una montaña de 400 metros de altura. La costa SW está constituida por altos acantilados de hielo, inaccesible desde el mar. El extremo NE es de piedra, baja y accesible, libre de hielos en verano. |
