SCAR Gazetteer Information: Each place can have one or more entries in the SCAR Composite Gazetteer, dependant on its origin. By viewing an individual entry, you may see multiple references to the same place. SCAR uses a more general feature type coding, so each place will, in general, have multiple feature types.

highest point (c. 1000m) of Fournier Ridge, Desko Mountains, Rothschild Island, was photographed from the air by RARE in December 1947 when, because of low cloud cover, it was thought to be on Dorsey Island; later incorrectly identified as a peak on Charcot Island (Ronne, 1949, p.236); following map compilation by FIDS in 1959 from RARE air photographs, finally identified and named in reference to the problem of identification ([in 69°22'S 72°42'W] APC, 1961, p.2; BA chart 3571, 14.vii.1961; Searle, 1963, end map; [co-ordinates corrected from USLANDSAT imagery of February 1975] APC, 1977, p.12). Gora Enigma (Soviet Union. AA, 1966, Pl.24).

Enigma Peak (USA) 69° 34' 00.0" S 72° 44' 00.0" W Peak
Name ID: 124844 Place ID: 4277

Peak, 1,000 m, surmounting Fournier Ridge, Desko Mountains, on Rothschild Island. Probably seen from a distance by Bellingshausen in 1821, Charcot in 1909, and the BGLE in 1936. It was observed and photographed from the air by the USAS, 1939-41, and mapped as the prominent NW peak of the island. Mapped in greater detail from air photos taken by the RARE, 1947-48, by Searle of the FIDS in 1960, and from U.S. Landsat imagery of February 1975. So named by UK-APC because of difficulty in identifying the peak during the map compilation.
