between Dundee Island and Seymour Island, bounded by Andersson Island, Tabarin Peninsula, Vega Island and James Ross Island to W, was roughly charted by Ross, December 1842-January 1843, and named Gulf of Erebus and Terror after his two ships HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, lost in the Canadian Arctic in 1848, with Sir John Franklin's expedition (Ross, chart, [1843?]). i Erebus Gulf (BA chart 1240, [post iv.1843]; Ross, 1847a, end map). Denominada en esta forma por la Expedición Antártica Británica, al mando del capitán James Clark Ross por los buque "Erebus" y "Terror", usados en las exploraciones de aguas en 1842-1843. Golfo situado en el lado SE del extremo NE de la Tierra de O'Higgins, está limitado por el NE por el grupo Ross y la costa de la península Luis Felipe por el W. El golfo se caracteriza por la gran concentración de hielos flotantes que normalmente cubren sus aguas en verano. Las aguas interiores del golfo, se encuentran completamente cubiertas de hielo consolidado, el que abre sólo en algunos veranos de condiciones glaciológicas muy favorables. |
