An island about 12 miles long lying in a north-south direction and about 6 miles wide, which lies in the Ross Sea about 80 miles east of Victoria Land and about 60 miles north of Cape Bird on Ross Island. It is about 243m high and is covered by a thin ice-cap. Discovered on 27 January 1841 by Ross, and named for Sir John Franklin, the noted Artic explorer who, as Governor of Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), had royally entertained the expedition on its way south at Hobart in 1840. |
