in Dallmann Bay, Palmer Archipelago, was roughly charted by BeAE, 30 January 1898, and named Île Gand after the Belgian town Gand (Gent) which subscribed towards the expedition (Lecointe, map, 1899; Gerlache, 1900, p.420). Ice-covered island, 3 mi long and 1.5 mi wide, lying at the N end of Schollaert Channel, between Anvers and Brabant Islands in the Palmer Archipelago. Discovered by the BelgAE, 1897-99, and named by Gerlache after Gand, the French form of Ghent, a city in Belgium where subscription drives were held to help finance the expedition. |

Descubierta por la Expedición Antártica Belga de 1897-1899 al mando del teniente Adrien de Gerlache, quien le dio el nombre por Gand, la traducción francesa de Ghent, una ciudad de Bélgica donde se hicieron suscripciones para ayudar el financiamiento de la Expedición. Isla plana cubierta de hielo, de 3 millas de largo y 1,5 milla de ancho situada al E del canal Schollaert entre las islas Anvers y Brabante en el archipiélago de Palmer. Su cima es redondeada de altura moderada. |
