N-most of the Berthelot Islands (q.v.), Graham Coast, was roughly charted by BGLE, 10 February 1935, and named descriptively since the island supports one of the most extensive areas of green moss (Pogonatum or Polytrichum spp.) in the Antarctic Peninsula area (Rymill, 1938b; APC, 1959a, p.7; DOS 610 sheet W 65 64, 1959). Green Islet (BA, 1948, p.204; APC, 1955, p.11). Islote Verde [translation of English name] (Chile. DNH chart 1502, 1962; IHA, 1974, p.292). In 1967 the island was designated SPA No.9 under the Antarctic Treaty (FO, 1967, p.6).

The northernmost island in the Berthelot Islands, lying just outside Collins Bay off the W coast of Graham Land. Discovered and first mapped by the FrAE, 1903-05, under Charcot. The name derives from the luxuriant growth of moss nearly 4 acres in extent on the northern slopes of the island.

Su nombre es descriptivo y se debe a que su cara N está cubierta de una frondosa vegetación de musgos, al parecer la más extensa y abundante encontrada en la Antártica, fue descubierto por la Expedición Francesa de Jean B. Charcot entre los años 1903-1905.
