Fue descubierta y denominada por el BGLE al mando del comandante John Rymill, quien dibujó mapas de esta área por tierra y desde el aire en 1936-1937. Su nombre indica la forma semicircular con que se alinean sus montañas de 600 a 900 metros. Isla de unas 7 millas de largo por 3 millas de ancho, que ocupa la mayor parte de la entra da a bahía Cuadrada, en la costa W de la península Tierra de O'Higgins. |

between Bourgeois Fjord and Square Bay, Fallières Coast, was surveyed by BGLE in 1936-37 and so named from its shape (Rymill, 1938b; BA chart 3175, 1.iii.1940; DCS 601 sheet 67 66, 1954; APC, 1955, p.12; DOS 310 Horseshoe Island sheet, 1961); resurveyed by FIDS from "Stonington Island", 1948-50, and from the FIDS station on this island, 1955-57, when the shape was found to be less like a horseshoe than originally believed. Horshoe [sic] Island (USAAF chart [LR-74], 1942). IÎle du Fer Cheval [translation of English name] (Rouch, 1944, map p.13). Isla Herradura [translation of English name] (Chile. DNH chart LIII, 1947; BA, 1966, p.27; Pierrou, 1970, p.424; Chile. IHA, 1974, p.151). Isla Horseshoe (Argentina. MM chart 109, 1949). The FIDS station was established at Sally Cove (q.v.), 11 March 1955, and occupied continuously until evacuated, 21 August 1960. Island 6.5 mi long and 3 mi wide occupying most of the entrance to Square Bay, along the W coast of Graham Land. Discovered and named by the BGLE under Rymill who mapped this area by land and from the air in 1936-37. Its name is indicative of the crescentic alignment of the 600 to 900 m peaks which give a comparable shape to the island. |
