off Adelaide, Adelaide Island, following survey by FIDS in October 1948 was named Avian Islet because of the large number and variety of birds found there (APC, 1955, p.4). The Argentina refuge hut Paso de los Andes was established on the island, 26 October 1957, and so called in reference to the crossing of the Andes by Gen. J. de San Martïn's army in January 1817. Avian Island (APC, 1959a, p.4; BA chart 3571, 14.vii.1961; 3577, 14.viii.1964). A camp was established on the island for the joint BAS-RN survey of the S coast of Adelaide Island in 1962-63 (Dixon, 1964). The Chilean refuge hut Comodoro Guesalaga was established on the island, 28 February 1963 (USHO, 1963, p.187). Islote Bories, after the Chilean ship Gobernador Bories, of the Sociedad Ballenera de Magallanes, which operated in the Graham Land area from 1906 (Chile. DNH chart 1600, 1963; IHA, 1974, p.51). Island, 0.75 mi long and 40 m high, lying close off the S tip of Adelaide Island. Discovered by the FrAE, 1908-10, under Charcot. Visited in 1948 by the FIDS, who so named it because of the large number and variety of birds found there. |

Su nombre data de 1963, fecha en que le fue asignado por el Instituto Hidrográfico de la Armada de Chile. Corresponde al nombre del buque fábrica ballenero chileno, de 3.000 toneladas, perteneciente a la Sociedad Ballenera de Magallanes, compañía chilena que operó en la Antártica desde 1906, con fines comerciales. Islote de aproximadamente 8 cables de largo por 3 de ancho, ubicado frente al extremo SW de la isla Adelaida y separado de ella por un canalizo navegable. La conformación orográfica del islote es similar a la de la isla Adelaida, siendo, al parecer, la terminación desmembrada de su relieve. |
