on George VI Sound, SE Alexander Island, was surveyed by FIDS from "Stonington Island", 11 November 1949, and named after Archibald Laurence Patrick (later Sir Laurence) Kirwan (b. 1907), Director and Secretary, RGS, 1945-75; author of The white road: a survey of polar exploration (London, 1959) (APC, 1955, p.13; DCS 601 sheet W 72 68, 1956; BAS 250P sheet SS 19-21/1, 1-DOS 1974). Zaliv Keruan (Soviet Union. MMF chart, 1961). Ledyanoy Zaliv Keruan (Soviet Union. AA, 1966, Pl.24).

Inlet in the SE corner of Alexander Island, 12 mi wide at its mouth and indenting 7 mi, opening on George VI Sound. The inlet is ice filled and merges almost imperceptibly with the rising ice slopes of Alexander Island to the west. Roughly mapped in 1949 by the FIDS, and named by the UK-APC for Laurence P. Kirwan, Director and Secretary of the Royal Geographical Society.
