forming N side of Paradise Harbour, Danco Coast, was roughly charted by BeAE, 10-11 February 1898, and named IÎle Lemaire, after Capt. C. Lemaire (Lemaire Channel, q.v.) (Lecointe, map, 1899; 1900a, map facing p.132). Lemaire Island (Cook, 1900, map p.xx; BA chart 3205, 1.vi.1901; 25.iii.1937; APC, 1955, p.13; BA chart 3566, 16.x.1959). Lemaire-Insel (Cook, 1903, map following p.x). Lemaires Ön (Nordenskjöld and others, 1904a, Del.1, end map). Isla Lemaire (Nordenskjöld and others, 1904-05, Tomo 1, end map; Pierrou, 1970, p.477; Chile. IHA, 1974, p.182). The island was further charted by BAE, 1920-22 (Bagshawe, 1921-22a, Vol.4, p.192). Lemaire Ö (HA chart, 1928). Lemaireön (Frödin, 1956, p.97). The island was photographed from the air by FIDASE and surveyed from the ground by FIDS from "Danco Island", 1956-58. Bryde Island (q.v.), in error (USAF chart 1762, 1959).

Island 4.5 mi long and 1.5 mi wide, lying 1 mi W of Duthiers Point off the W coast of Graham Land. Discovered by the BelgAE, 1897-99, under Gerlache, who named it for Charles Lemaire.

Descubierta por la Expedición Antártica Belga, al mando del teniente Adrien de Gerlache, quien le denominó en honor a C. Lemaire. Isla situada a 1 milla al W del cabo Lacaze-Duthiers, limita por el N la bahía Paraíso, costa W de la península Tierra de O'Higgins. Tiene aproximadamente 5 millas de largo por 2 de ancho, es escarpada de relieve irregular, presenta varios picachos de variables alturas. Sus costas están constituidas en su mayor parte por altas barreras de hielo. La isla está cubierta de nieve, salvo en la costa E cuyas laderas abruptas presentan manchas de piedra negra.
