Fue descubierta y denominada por la Expedición Francesa, que dirigió el Dr. Jean B. Charcot entre los años 1908-1910. Isla montañosa y abrupta de forma triangular de 11,5 millas, tiene 915 metros de altura, situada en el sector N de la bahía Hanusse, costa W de la península Tierra de O'Higgins. La isla se presenta en gran parte libre de hielos en verano. Sus costas están formadas por acantilados de hielo.
