Fue descubierto por la Expedición Antártica Belga entre los años 1897-1899, liderada por el teniente Adrien de Gerlache. El nombre aparece en un mapa que se basa en un levantamiento de 1927 hecho por el personal del Discovery. Su nombre se debe a su cercanía con la isla León. Seno que se encuentra en la desembocadura del glaciar León, a 10 millas al SW de punta Van Ryswyck en la costa SE de la isla Anvers, en el archipiélago de Palmer.

Small passage between Lion Island and the SE coast of Anvers Island, in the Palmer Archipelago. Discovered by the BelgAE, 1897-99, under Gerlache. The name appears on a map based on a 1927 survey by DI personnel on the Discovery. Named for its association with Lion Island.
