flowing E into Whirlwind Inlet, Bowman Coast, was sighted by Wilkins on his flight of 20 December 1928 and photographed from the air by USAS in 1940; surveyed by FIDS from "Stonington Island" and from "Hope Bay" in 1947; in association with the names of glaciologists grouped in this area, named after François Emile Matthes (1874-1948), American glacial geomorphologist and glaciologist of Dutch birth with USGS, 1896-1947; Chairman, Committee on Glaciers, American Geophysical Union, 1931-48, and sometime Secretary, International Commission on Snow and Glaciers (BA chart 3570, 4.vi.1954; APC, 1955, p.15; DCS 601 sheet 67 64, 1955). Glacier 9 mi long, flowing E into Whirlwind Inlet between Demorest and Chamberlin Glaciers, on the E coast of Graham Land. Discovered by Sir Hubert Wilkins on a flight of Dec. 20, 1928, and photographed from the air by the USAS in 1940. Charted by the FIDS in 1947 and named for Francois E. Matthes, glaciologist, then chief geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey. |

Fue descubierto por Sir Hubert Wilkins durante un vuelo del 20 de diciembre de 1928 y fotografiado desde el aire por el USAS en 1940. Fue cartografiado por el FIDS en 1947. El nombre corresponde al apellido de François E. Matthes, glaciólogo y geólogo jefe del U.S. Geological Survey. Glaciar de unas 9 millas de largo, que fluye hacia la ensenada Whirlwind entre los glaciares Demorest y Chamberlin, en la costa E de la península Tierra de O'Higgins. |
