The area was first visited by an ANARE party in 1956 and mapped from ANARE air photographs. Named by ANCA for G.W. McKinnon, Geographical Officer with the Antarctic Division, Melbourne, Officer in Charge of the ANARE Prince Charles Mountains survey party in 1969.
