between Bertrand Ice Pied- mont and Cape Berteaux, Fallières Coast, was sighted by FAE, 1908-10, in January 1909, but not recognized as a large bay (Charcot, 1912, Pl.2); surveyed by BGLE in 1936 (Rymill, 1938a, map facing p.432); resurveyed by FIDS from "Stonington Island" in 1948 and named after Kapt. Ejnar Mikkelsen (1880-1971), Danish Arctic explorer; member of Amdrup expedition to E Greenland, 1900, and of Baldwin-Ziegler Polar Expedition, 1901-02; Joint Leader of expedition to the Beaufort Sea, 1906-08, and Leader of Danish expedition to NE Greenland, 1909-12; Founder of the Scoresby Sund Eskimo settlement, E Greenland, in 1924; Inspector for E Greenland, 1933-51 (APC, 1955, p.15; DCS 601 sheet 68 66, 1955). Bay, 15 mi wide at its mouth and indenting 10 mi, entered between Bertrand Ice Piedmont and Cape Berteaux along the W coast of Graham Land. First seen from a distance in 1909 by the FrAE under Charcot, but not recognized as a large bay. First surveyed in 1936 by the BGLE under Rymill, and resurveyed by the FIDS in 1948-49. The name was proposed by members of BGLE for Ejnar Mikkelsen, Danish Arctic explorer and Inspector for East Greenland, 1934-50.

Fue vista primeramente a la distancia en 1909 por la Expedición Antártica Francesa del Dr. Jean B. Charcot, pero no reconocida como una gran bahía. Levantada por primera vez en el año 1936 por la Expedición Británica del comandante John Rymill y relevantada por el FIDS en 1848-1849. El nombre fue propuesto por miembros de la Expedición Británica por Ejnar Mikkelsen, danés, explorador del ártico. Bahía situada a 18 millas al SW de bahía Rymill, de la que la separa un cabo ancho y bajo, cubierto por un manto de hielo. Por el SW la cierra el cabo Berteaux, costa W de la península Tierra de O'Higgins.
