Search Antarctic Names

A group of three small islands off the coast of George V Land. Discovered by AAE (1911-14) under Sir Douglas Mawson, who named them after W.H. Hannam, a member of the expedition.

A high, steep and rocky buttress on Big Ben, Heard Island. It runs north from Davis Dome towards Saddle Point. Named after Francis T. Hannan, Officer-in-Charge and Meteorologist with the 1951 ANARE Heard Island Expedition.

An ice-shelf in the south-west of Casey Bay, Enderby Land. Photographed from ANARE aircraft in 1956. Visited by an ANARE party led by Bruce H. Stinear in October, 1957. Named after F.T. Hannan, meteorologist at Mawson in 1957.

An isolated, submerged rock about 5 km due north of Magnetic Island, off the Vestfold Hills. Least depth is probably not more than 3 m. The rock was struck by M.V. Kista Dan on 29 January, 1955.

A group of nunataks rising to about 2140 m above sea level and about 300 m above the plateau, in Kemp Land. Mapped from air photographs taken by the Lars Christensen Expedition (1936-37). Named after H.E. Hansen, Norwegian cartographer who compiled excellent maps of Antarctica.

A bay about 7 km wide, indenting the land between Archer Point and Williamson Head in Oates Land. Photographed by USN Operation Highjump (1946-47). Sketched and photographed by Phillip Law, leader of ANARE on the MV Magga Dan on 20 February 1959. Named after Captain Harald Moller Pedersen, master of the MVMagga Dan during the expedition.

A rock outcrop on the Mawson Escarpment, Mac.Robertson Land, between Helmore Glacier and Manning Glacier. Photographed by ANARE in 1956 and 1970. A geodetic survey station was established on the feature during the ANARE Prince Charles Mountains survey in 1972. Named after S R. Harbour, senior diesel mechanic at Mawson in 1970 and 1971, plant inspector at Mawson in 1973 and a member of the Prince Charles Mountains survey parties in 1971, 1972 and 1974.

One of the larger islands in the Bol'shie Skalistye Islands, located in southern Prydz Bay.

A glacier west of Mount Caroline Mikkelsen on the Ingrid Christensen Coast. Delineated in 1952 by Dr J.R. Roscoe from air photographs taken by USN Operation Highjump (1946-47). Dr Roscoe was photogrammetrist with Operation Highjump and USN Operation Windmill (1947-48).

An island in the Larsemann Hills between Easther Island and Broknes.

A glacier (partly in the Ross Dependency) flowing from the polar plateau north-east between Daniels Range and Sample Nunataks and then eastwards to the Rennick Glacier. Plotted from air photographs taken by the US Navy in 1960-62. Named after B.W. Harlin, meteorologist in charge at Little America Station in 1957 and Station scientific leader at the South Pole Station in 1961.

A valley just east of Coxcomb Peak in the Allan Hills. Discovered by the NZARP Allan Hills Expedition (1964). Named after Prof. T.M. Harris, who has made outstanding contributions to Mesozoic paleobotany.

A glacier about 37 km east of Cape Carr on the Wilkes Coast of Wilkes Land. Delineated from air photographs taken by USN Operation Highjump (1946-47) and named by USACAN after G.W. Harrison passed midshipman on the tender Flying Fish of the United States Exploring Expedition (1938-42) under Wilkes.

An east-west ridge with two small outliers off its western end, 4 km ENE of Mount Dovers in the Athos Range, Prince Charles Mountains. Plotted from ANARE air photographs. Named after B.Harriss, helicopter pilot with the Prince Charles Mountains survey party in 1969.

Two swellings of the shelf-ice where the Shackleton Ice Shelf rides over the underlying rocky ridge leading north from Cape Moyes, Queen Mary Land. Named by the Australasian Antarctic Expedition 1911-1914 for CT Harrisson who was a member of the expedition.
