Named to commemorate the so-called Operation Starlight during which depots were laid for further work and mapping and geological investigations accomplished.

Discovered by the Western Base Party of AAE (1911-14). Named by Sir Douglas Mawson after Lord Strathcona, High Commissioner for Canada in 1911 and a patron of the expedition.
