This remarkable, kidney-shaped ice marginal lake is located at Cape Jones, Obruchev Hills. It is about 500 m long and 150 m wide with a sheer rock and ice perimeter wall up to 30-40 m high which directly abuts the rapidly flowing Denman Glacier. The water level in this lake is in delicate equilibrium and fluctuates dramatically on a seasonal basis. The first impression gained on visiting the lake is that it has been formed by the uniform collapse of the bed, leaving sheer rock and ice walls up to 30-40 m high. This impression conjures up visions of a giant cauldron. |
