All scientific data collected by the Australian Antarctic program (AAp) are eventually described in the Catalogue of Australian Antarctic and Subantarctic Metadata (CAASM). CAASM can be used to search through AAp data descriptions, and it also provides links to access publicly available datasets, which can either be immediately downloaded or obtained from the Australian Antarctic Data Centre (AADC).

Description

This collection describes the identification of bubble free layers from ultra high resolution ice core images of the DSS1617 ice core from Law Dome, East Antarctica. The compilation comprises 30 image files from Intermediate Layer Ice Core scanning of the DSS1617 ice cores, as well as three text files.

The first text file, "DSS1617_Annual_Horizons.txt", provides the annual layer horizon depths (age-by-depth chronology) of a surface core from the Dome Summit South site, DSS1617. Column 1 is the annual horizon year, and column 2 is the depth (in metres) of this annual horizon in the DSS1617 core.

The second text file, named "DSS1617_BFL_depths.txt", is a single column of the depths in metres of all bubble free layers identified in Zhang et al. (2023).

The third text file, named "DSS1617_ice_core_images_details.txt" provides all the information to be able to find the bubble free layers and assign their depth and age from the DSS1617 chronology. This file has four columns of information. Column 1 is the name of each image file, column 2 is the name of the ice core shown in the image file, column 3 is the top depth (metres) of that ice core shown in the image, and column 4 is the bottom depth (metres) of the ice core shown in the image.

The three text files used in combination with the 30 ILCS ice core image files enable the user to compile all stratigraphic information (such as bubble free layers) by age and depth in the DSS1617 ice core, according to the chronology developed in Jong et al. (2022).
