All scientific data collected by the Australian Antarctic program (AAp) are eventually described in the Catalogue of Australian Antarctic and Subantarctic Metadata (CAASM). CAASM can be used to search through AAp data descriptions, and it also provides links to access publicly available datasets, which can either be immediately downloaded or obtained from the Australian Antarctic Data Centre (AADC).

Description

This data includes two appendices for a systematic literature review (A & B.)

Appendix A – Downloaded Article Data (CSV Files) - Appendix A contains the raw bibliographic output downloaded from three literature-search platforms: Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science. Each platform exports citation data in comma-separated value (.csv) format. These search results were generated as part of a systematic review on water availability and photosynthetic life in Antarctica. Because each platform exports different metadata fields, the structure of the CSV files is not uniform. All records contain at least the article title and author list, but other fields vary by source. The dataset also includes records that were later excluded during screening; these remain in the CSVs to preserve full transparency of the initial search.

Each CSV represents one search engine. No additional modifications were made beyond converting downloaded files into CSV and ensuring consistent character encoding (UTF-8).

Purpose

The purpose of Appendix A is to document the complete set of articles initially returned by the three search engines. This ensures traceability of the systematic review process, from initial search to final article selection. By providing the raw outputs, future users can verify the search reproducibility, reapply filters, detect missing records, or compare results with future versions of Scopus, Web of Science, or Google Scholar.

Appendix B - Extracted Data Items (Google Notebooks LM Outputs) - Appendix B contains the information extracted from each article that passed screening. Extraction was performed using Google Notebooks LM, an AI-assisted text analysis tool. For every article, the following data items were recorded: Author, Title, Journal, Year, Type (article, book, or review), Aim, Funding source, Location (study area), Spatial and temporal extent, Environmental variables, Vegetation studied, Input (data sources, datasets, or materials used), Data collection methods used to obtain observations or samples), Analysis (analytical methods, modelling approaches), Validations (validation datasets, ground truthing, or verification steps), Findings, Issues (problems or caveats reported by authors), Limitations, Future direction.

These fields were selected because they align with the requirements for conducting a PRISMA-2020-compliant systematic review. Each row in Appendix B corresponds to a single study and can be traced back to the original article using the title and author fields. The purpose of Appendix B is to provide a transparent, verifiable record of the information extracted from each included study. By listing all extracted items in a structured, uniform format, future researchers can: confirm that the review’s interpretations match the source material, reuse the dataset in meta-analyses, update or repeat the review, compare methodological changes in Antarctic hydrological and ecological research over time.

Appendix B serves as the “processed layer” of the dataset, bridging raw bibliographic data (Appendix A) and the synthesis presented in the literature review.
