All scientific data collected by the Australian Antarctic program (AAp) are eventually described in the Catalogue of Australian Antarctic and Subantarctic Metadata (CAASM). CAASM can be used to search through AAp data descriptions, and it also provides links to access publicly available datasets, which can either be immediately downloaded or obtained from the Australian Antarctic Data Centre (AADC).

Description

This dataset contains data on the habitats, distribution and numbers of Adelie Penguins (Pygoscellis adeliae) in the Mawson area, Antarctica during 1981 and 1988. The data are obtained from aerial photographs obtained at various times, during the 1981-82 and 1988-89 seasons. The results are listed in the documentation. Comparisons are made with census data collected in the 1971-72 summer.

Data from this record has been incorporated into a larger Adelie penguin dataset described by the metadata record - Annual population counts at selected Adelie Penguin colonies within the AAT (SOE_seabird_candidate_sp_AP). It also falls under ASAC project 1219 (ASAC_1219).

Data can be accessed via that metadata record.

Quality

The data provides a complete survey over the Mawson and Rookery Island areas. The aerial surveys have provided a precise estimate of population sizes. It is intended that the survey be repeated every 3 to 5 years. Aerial photography was taken during the 1981-82 and 1988-89 seasons. During the 1981-82 season, photographs were taken on 14 January 1982, using a Kodak Tri-X 400 ASA black and white film in a bulk-loaded 35mm Nikon camera, from a helicopter flying at 300m. The 1988-89 photography was taken on 20 December 1988 using a Linhoff Aerotronica 70mm camera with a 120mm lens, from a helicopter flying at 500m. One roll (30m)of Kodak Tri-X was used. From the photographs, exact counts of adults present were made, including non-breeders and partners of incubating and brooding birds. These were transformed from counts of adults to an estimate of the nests established at the start of each season, using weekly census data from monitored colonies. Maps show the locations of colonies, and the results of these and any previous censuses.
