All scientific data collected by the Australian Antarctic program (AAp) are eventually described in the Catalogue of Australian Antarctic and Subantarctic Metadata (CAASM). CAASM can be used to search through AAp data descriptions, and it also provides links to access publicly available datasets, which can either be immediately downloaded or obtained from the Australian Antarctic Data Centre (AADC).

In association with the Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research, Aleks Terauds (Australian Antarctic Division) and Steven Chown (Stellenbosch University, Monash University from July 2012) have been leading research into biogeographical classification of terrestrial Antarctica. This research culminated in the manuscript 'Conservation biogeography of the Antarctic', full citation:
Terauds, A., Chown, S.L., Convey, P., Peat, H., Watts, D., Morgan, F., Keys, H. and Bergstrom, D.M. (2012) Conservation biogeography of the Antarctic. Diversity and Distributions. In press.
The primary finding of this paper was that terrestrial Antarctica could be classified into 15 biologically distinct regions or Antarctic Conservation Biogeographic Regions. A shapefile of the polygons representing these ice free regions is available for download. The layer is based on the most up to date map of ice-free areas of Antarctica (from the Antarctic Digital Database v5 copyright SCAR 1993-2006). Therefore use of this shapefile in analyses is subject to the copyright restrictions of SCAR and interested parties can also contact Aleks.Terauds@aad.gov.au with any questions. Other shapefiles provided here are the expert-defined bioregions (one of the spatial frameworks used in the analyses of Terauds et al. 2012) and the ASPA/ASMA point and polygon shapefiles. A separate PDF is included in the folder containing the ASPA/ASMA shapefiles with terms of use.
The purpose of the dataset is to provide the shapefiles used in, and resulting from, the biogeographic analyses undertaken in Terauds A, Chown SL, Morgan F, Peat H, Watts D, Keys H, Convey P and Bergstrom DM (2012) Conservation biogeography of the Antarctic. In particular, the shapefile representing Antarctic Biogeographic Areas should prove useful to managers and other Antarctic researchers in delineating biologically distinct areas of Antarctica.
