CEAMARC_Diatom_Abundance
All scientific data collected by the Australian Antarctic program (AAp) are eventually described in the Catalogue of Australian Antarctic and Subantarctic Metadata (CAASM). CAASM can be used to search through AAp data descriptions, and it also provides links to access publicly available datasets, which can either be immediately downloaded or obtained from the Australian Antarctic Data Centre (AADC).

Description
This dataset contains the abundance of diatom species found in the surface sediments from cores collected as part of the CEAMARC (Collaborative East Antarctic Marine Census) mission. The cores were collected from the George V basin along the Antarctic coast. Latitude, longitude and water depth data are included for each site. Sediments were prepared following standard diatom preparation techniques (Rathburn et al 1997).
Purpose
The purpose of the data set is to catalogue the distribution of diatoms within surface sediments along the Antarctic coast.
Quality
No problems to report with regards to the dataset or data collection.
The site codes are the names given to the individual sites by the CEAMARC mission. See other CEAMARC records for more information (particularly the "Events" metadata record).
Tab 1 "Raw data" are the counts of the number of individuals of any given species found at each site, and also includes the absolute abundance data for diatom valves (not counting Chaetoceros resting spores) presented in valves per gram dry weight of sediment. Tab 2 "Percent format" is the same data, but converted to a percent relative abundance for each species. Tab 3 contains the location information.
