All scientific data collected by the Australian Antarctic program (AAp) are eventually described in the Catalogue of Australian Antarctic and Subantarctic Metadata (CAASM). CAASM can be used to search through AAp data descriptions, and it also provides links to access publicly available datasets, which can either be immediately downloaded or obtained from the Australian Antarctic Data Centre (AADC).

Quality

Satellite radar altimetry was used to derive the geometry of the surface of the Antarctic continent. The method is particularly effective over ocean, shelf and flat inland ice. Data from ERS-1 and ERS-2 radar altimeters was processed to produce heights with accuracies of a few centimetres over the ocean areas and 1 - 2 decimetres for the flat ice sheets of Antarctica. Distances between sample points varies from 5km near the pole to 10 km at the northern extremes.

The derivation process is described in a paper titled 'A Digital Terrain Ice Model of Antarctica derived by ERS Radar Altimeter Data' by J. Ihde, J. Eck, U. Schirmer. Coordinates listed in the file GRI.ORT.SLC.FIN referred to in the paper were used to generate this shapefile. Only points with valid heights were included in the shapefile - 297,845 out of a total of 613,800. Elevation values of 999999 indicate invalid heights in the file GRI.ORT.SLC.FIN.

Positions (latitude, longitude) are based on WGS84. Orthometric heights (elevation) are related to EGM96 geoid.
