Description

This dataset contains bathymetry (water depth), ship's heading, ship's speed and position data collected during the Nella Dan Voyage 4 1987-88. This was the Nella Dan's final voyage, as the ship ran aground at Macquarie Island and was subsequently scuttled. Some marine science was carried out en route to Macquarie Island from Hobart. Data are available online from the Australian Antarctic Division Data Centre web page (see Related URL below). The voyage report in the download file provides extensive details on the grounding, salvage, and scuttling of the ship.

Nella Dan grounded on December 3, at approximately 18:35 local time. The ship was eventually scuttled on December 24 in deep water off Macquarie Island at 17:42 local time, at 54 degrees, 37.4 minutes S and 159 degrees, 13.3 minutes E.

Where data for a particular sensor do not exist for a particular time, the last known value is used unless the sensor has been disabled or has encountered an error. For example, some sensors only record data every minute, but the resolution for the underway dataset is 10 seconds, so the same value will be used 6 times a minute. No averages are taken for sensors that capture data at a rate other than every 10 seconds. Instead, each record will be a snapshot of each sensor at that time.

Data are available online via the Australian Antarctic Division Data Centre web page. A "supplementary" dataset is also available for download from the provided URL. It contains raw data collected directly from the ship, which has not been quality checked.
