All scientific data collected by the Australian Antarctic program (AAp) are eventually described in the Catalogue of Australian Antarctic and Subantarctic Metadata (CAASM). CAASM can be used to search through AAp data descriptions, and it also provides links to access publicly available datasets, which can either be immediately downloaded or obtained from the Australian Antarctic Data Centre (AADC).
This dataset contains the underway data from Voyage 2 1993-94 of the Aurora Australis. This was a non-marine science voyage, but NoQalms data types were logged at 60-second intervals. The observations were taken between October and November 1993 en route from Hobart to Mawson to Davis and back to Hobart. See the Marine Science Support Report at the Related URL section.
From the voyage leader's report:
The voyage departed on time at 1700 hours, 12 October 1993 and arrived in Hobart, Self's POint at 07:00 17 November. All voyage objectives per the voyage brief were achieved.
Arrival at Mawson was delayed by one day due to heavy swells between Hobart and the pack ice. Prior to Mawson, scientific programs for observations were performed by volunteers notating records held on the bridge. Seal programs were conducted for a census of seals and tagging of crabeater seal pups, although only one was tagged, with a rare find in a dead Ross seal pup, which was recovered. Pack ice conditions, although extensive, were relatively easily manoeuvred. The ship made fast at the Mawson ice edge at 12:36 on 28 October, 1993.
Mawson operations were conducted in near perfect conditions with combined flyoff and once Hagglunds trip to the ship allowing transfer of all passengers, cargo, RTA cargo and RTA of 4 wintering expeditioners. A rare sighting of pods of large numbers of rare southern bottlenose whales were made for the full stay of the ship at the ice edge, 46 NM from Mawson. Sightings of killer whales were also made. Departure from Mawson was made at 16:10, 30 October.
Transit to Davis was made via the Fram Bank area. An ice recce was conducted utilising a clear and enhanced satellite weather chart of the aerea and an effective route established. Whilst areas of solid 10/10 ice were encountered, the overall transit time was 58 hours for 490 NM. Several pods of killer whales weer sighted after passing the Fram Bank area.
Davis ice edge was gained at 02:00 2 November.
Final position, at a point 2900 metres from the beach to allow fuel transfer was gained after 14 hours of breaking up to 1.95m ice. During the breaking time was taken to fly off passengers and their personal baggage. Operations commenced immediately with cargo and set up of the fuel transfer line. Cargo discharge and RTA loading operated between 08:00 and 22:00 each day whilst the fuel transfer was around the clock. All cargo and fuel transfer was completed at 21:00 4 November. The vessel departed Davis at 08:30 5 November, 1993, in near perfect weather conditions.
The return to Hobart leg of the voyage after departure from Davis proceeded directly north exiting the pack ice on 17 November.

Where data for a particular sensor do not exist for a particular time, the last known value is used unless the sensor has been disabled or has encountered an error. For example, some sensors only record data every minute, but the resolution for the underway dataset is 10 seconds, so the same value will be used 6 times a minute. No averages are taken for sensors that capture data at a rate other than every 10 seconds. Instead, each record will be a snapshot of each sensor at that time.
Data are available online via the AADC web page. A "supplementary" dataset is also available for download from the provided URL. It contains raw data collected directly from the ship, which has not been quality checked.
Reports from the voyage are also available for download.
