All scientific data collected by the Australian Antarctic program (AAp) are eventually described in the Catalogue of Australian Antarctic and Subantarctic Metadata (CAASM). CAASM can be used to search through AAp data descriptions, and it also provides links to access publicly available datasets, which can either be immediately downloaded or obtained from the Australian Antarctic Data Centre (AADC).

Description

Population data derived from counts of penguins on aerial photographs taken at 500m altitude. Odbert Island colonies were not photographed as the island is within ASPA 103. 23 flight runs were made. Census data for Whitney Point and Shirley Island were included in Woehler et al 1994. Census data for the remaining islands will be incorporated into a regional synthesis following aerial photography planned for 2004/05.

Penguins were counted from the photographs by eye.

This project was instigated under a one off ASAC project (ASAC_234), but has now been subsumed under ASAC_1219.

Copies of the maps as PDF and TIFF downloads are available through the SCAR Map Catalogue
(see the links in the related links section)

Quality

Aerial photography was obtained using a Linhof camera from helicopter overflights of all Adelie penguin colonies, with the exception of Odbert Island (ASPA 103).

Access

Hard copies of photographs are available in the AADC. All flight lines have been entered into the Aerial Photograph Catalogue (see the URL given below).

Tracings of the penguin colony boundaries by Eric Woehler are stored in the Australian Antarctic Division's Map Store.
