All scientific data collected by the Australian Antarctic program (AAp) are eventually described in the Catalogue of Australian Antarctic and Subantarctic Metadata (CAASM). CAASM can be used to search through AAp data descriptions, and it also provides links to access publicly available datasets, which can either be immediately downloaded or obtained from the Australian Antarctic Data Centre (AADC).

Description

Environmental variables in the region of the Kerguelen Plateau compiled from different sources and provided in the ascii raster format. Mean surface and seafloor temperature, salinity and their respective amplitude data are available on the time coverage 1955-2012 and over five decades: 1955 to 1964, 1965 to 1974, 1975 to 1984, 1985 to 1994 and 1995 to 2012. N/A was set as the no data reference.
Future projections are provided for several parameters: they were modified after the Bio-ORACLE database (Tyberghein et al. 2012). They are based on three IPCC scenarii (B1, AIB, A2) for years 2100 and 2200 (IPCC, 4th report).

Purpose

The dataset belongs to a toolkit of both occurrences and environmental parameters that may be used in species distribution modelling. The environmental descriptors provided in the dataset were compiled from different sources. They were selected according to their relevance to echinoid ecology.

Quality

Environmental data were sized up with R3.3.0 software (R Core Team 2015) to better fit the sampling area of where echinoids occur on the Kerguelen Plateau (63 degrees/81 degrees W; -46 degrees/-56 degrees S). They were set up to a 0.1 degree grid-cell spatial resolution with origin fixed at 0 (top left corner). Seafloor temperature, salinity, oxygen and nutrient concentration data were generated by using the provided data of the World Ocean Circulation experiment 2013 database and depth data.

In marine nearshore areas, grid-cells with positive depth values above sea level were corrected for accuracy using ArcGis Raster Editor Tool (ESRI 2011) based on geographic charts (IGN: National Geographic Institute, EAN: 3282110102707, scale 1/200 000) and raw depth values measured in the field (Feral et al. 2013, 2014, Saucede et al. 2015).
Roughness data were computed using the 'terrain' function of the raster package R3.3.0 (Hijmans and van Etten 2012).
