All scientific data collected by the Australian Antarctic program (AAp) are eventually described in the Catalogue of Australian Antarctic and Subantarctic Metadata (CAASM). CAASM can be used to search through AAp data descriptions, and it also provides links to access publicly available datasets, which can either be immediately downloaded or obtained from the Australian Antarctic Data Centre (AADC).

Description

The 35mm photos were taken by Dr Jenny Scott in December 1986-January 1987, October 1987-February 1988 and October 2000. The photos represent the first time series of a longterm fixed-point photo-monitoring project. They serve as a baseline for documenting vegetation and landscape change between this time-frame and when photos were re-taken in 2003-04 (HI_VEG_PHOTOPOINTS_2), and for the future.

Area covered: eastern and southern Heard Island from Fairchild Beach (Compton Lagoon) to Long Beach, and northwestern and northern Heard Island from Cape Gazert to Saddle Point including Laurens Peninsula. The majority of images in southern and eastern Heard Island were re-taken by Scott in 2003-2004 (HI_VEG_PHOTOPOINTS_2). None of the images from northwest and northern Heard Island were re-taken in 2003-2004.

Number of images: 334 jpg images, less than 4 MB each. The images are also available at high resolution (approx. 4000 dpi), with each image approximately 66 MB; and as A4 contact sheets with 6 high-res images to a sheet, eg. for printing to use in the field. All the high res images, including contact sheets, total 47 GBs.

Further information on image labelling etc is available in metadata notes (word doc) and an excel spreadsheet, both accompanying the images.

Quality

The 35mm photos were taken by Dr Jenny Scott in December 1986-January 1987, October 1987-February 1988 and October 2000. Cameras used between 1986 and 1988 were two Olympus OM-1 SLR cameras with 50mm and 28mm lenses. Cameras used in 2000 were two Nikon FM-2 SLR cameras with 50mm and 28mm lenses. The photos represent the first time series of a longterm fixed-point photo-monitoring project. They serve as a baseline for documenting vegetation and landscape change between this time-frame and when photos were re-taken in 2003-04 (HI_VEG_PHOTOPOINTS_2), and for the future.

All the high res images, including contact sheets, require 11 DVDs (total 47 GBs).

Further information on image labelling etc is available in metadata notes (word doc)and an excel spreadsheet, both accompanying the images.

Differences between 1986-2000 and 2003-2004 image series

The basic ID of equivalent images in the 1986-2000 time series and the 2003-2004 time series is the same (eg. JJS-SK-001 or JJS_SK_001). Differences between the two time series are as follows:

- The 1986-2000 images are mostly single images, and the 2003-2004 images are mainly panoramas. The 2003-2004 images include, and extend beyond, the scene shown in the single 1986-2000 image, and were usually taken with both 50mm and 28mm lenses.
- The 1986-1988 images were taken with an Olympus OM-1 SLR camera (50mm or 28mm lens) and the 2000-2004 images with a Nikon FM-2 SLR camera (both 50mm and 28mm lenses). The coverage of the Olympus and Nikon lenses are slightly different.
- Not all images in the 1986-2000 series were re-taken in 2003-2004, and some additional photo-points were introduced in 2003-2004. This is indicated in the image ID, eg with the prefix 'SKnew'.
