All scientific data collected by the Australian Antarctic program (AAp) are eventually described in the Catalogue of Australian Antarctic and Subantarctic Metadata (CAASM). CAASM can be used to search through AAp data descriptions, and it also provides links to access publicly available datasets, which can either be immediately downloaded or obtained from the Australian Antarctic Data Centre (AADC).

Description

Taken from sections of the report:

This report details survey work carried out in the Australian Territory of Heard Island as part of Voyage 2 during October and November 2000 by LANDINFO on behalf of the Australian Antarctic Division.
The principle aim of this work was to acquire aerial photography for mapping and fauna and flora research and to carry out a detail survey of the ANARE station at Atlas Cove. A number of other tasks were also carried out. This report details each task carried out and the results achieved. The work was carried out by Roger Handsworth and Derrin Lee.

The Antarctic Division's Brief, which outlines the details of the program, is included in Appendix A.
There were 3 main goals for the expedition. These were to complete a detailed survey of the ANARE Station at Atlas Cove, to acquire aerial photographs, and to survey ground control points identified from existing aerial photography.
Aerial photographs acquired were to satisfy the following needs:
- Archaeological (Identification of historic sites)
- Biological (Identification and assessment of flora and fauna)
- Cartographical (Mapping purposes)
- Glaciological (Estimation of glacial retreat)

A list of the individual tasks and a summary of the achievements can be found at Appendix B.

The download file contains a copy of the survey report, plus all survey data collected at Heard Island.

2025-08-28 - an update was made to the dataset to include a copy of some of the data in geopackage format.

- Due to the need to establish field camps at both Spit Bay and Atlas Cove, survey staff were required to assist the Station Leader with this task until Friday 27th October 2000.
- In the period between Friday 27th October 2000 and Thursday 9th November, fourteen days were potentially available to the survey party to carry out its tasks.
- The RSV Aurora Australis arrived at Heard Island at 1 PM (UTC+7) on Thursday 9th November 2000. The survey party had boarded the Aurora Australis by 12 PM (UTC+7) on Friday 10th November 2000 and the ship departed Heard Island at 7 PM (UTC+7) that evening.
