All scientific data collected by the Australian Antarctic program (AAp) are eventually described in the Catalogue of Australian Antarctic and Subantarctic Metadata (CAASM). CAASM can be used to search through AAp data descriptions, and it also provides links to access publicly available datasets, which can either be immediately downloaded or obtained from the Australian Antarctic Data Centre (AADC).
The Australian Antarctic Gazetteer is maintained by the Australian Antarctic Data Centre and the Secretary of the Australian Antarctic Division Place Names Committee. It contains information about names in the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands. Users can search by place name, region, feature type, latitude or longitude. Displayed information includes a descriptive narrative, and where available, an image, source information and altitude.
Users can download the whole gazetteer or their search results as a KML or CSV file.
The gazetteer is being regularly updated, as more source information becomes available. Gazetteer data have been collated from various sources to provide information, descriptions and images of locations and features in the Australian Antarctic Territory and Territory of Heard and McDonald Islands. The search provides accurate results, based on the information contained in the database, and the search query specifications. Positional accuracy is dependent on the accuracy of the original data provided for use in the gazetteer, but has been verified as it is collated, although no responsibility can be taken for data accuracy.
The data are stored on the web and are available through the searchable interface, via the given URLs.
