All scientific data collected by the Australian Antarctic program (AAp) are eventually described in the Catalogue of Australian Antarctic and Subantarctic Metadata (CAASM). CAASM can be used to search through AAp data descriptions, and it also provides links to access publicly available datasets, which can either be immediately downloaded or obtained from the Australian Antarctic Data Centre (AADC).
GPS surveys of Adelie Penguin colonies in the Robinson Group, Antarctica were carried out by field biologists from the Australian Antarctic Division during the 2005/06 and 2006/07 seasons. In 2005/06 point data were collected representing the presence or absence of colonies on the islands. The data were collected by Matt Low and Lisa Meyer. In 2006/07 polygon data were collected representing the colonies on the islands. The data were collected by Matt Low and Rhonda Pike. The biologists were working on a project led by Dr Colin Southwell of the Australian Antarctic Division.
These data were collected using Garmin handheld GPS receivers, except for the colony boundaries at Auster Islands and Macey islands which were collected using a Trimble Geoexplorer and the data subsequently differentially corrected.
The data representing the colonies were 'cleaned' after conversion to GIS format to remove any overlaps in polygons and to remove small insignificant polygons resulting from crossovers of the polygon boundaries. For data quality information about any of the polygons in the 2006/07 data use the Qinfo number for that polygon in the attribute table of the shapefile to search at the 'Search datasets - quality' tab at the 'Search SCAR Feature Catalogue' url below.
The dates provided in temporal coverage are approximate only.
