A small island, partly contained in a glacier tongue on the Ingrid Christensen Coast about 3 km west of Amanda Bay. Mapped from air photographs taken by the Lars Christensen Expedition (1936). First visited by an ANARE survey party led by Max J Corry in February 1969.
Named after William D Cowell, cook at Mawson in 1969 and a member of the ANARE Prince Charles Mountains survey party in 1969.
