Fue descubierto por la Expedición Antártica Francesa de 1837-1840, al mando del comandante Jules Dumont D'Urville y bautizado así por el subteniente Jean Gourdin del buque "Astrolabe". El islote fue reidentificado y cartografiado por el FIDS en 1945-1947. Es el islote más grande de un grupo de islotes y rocas que está situado a 1 milla al N de cabo Siffrey, el extremo N de la península Luis Felipe.
