Fue descubierto por el USAS, quienes exploraron a lo largo de esta costa por tierra y desde el aire entre 1943-1947 y denominado de esta forma en honor a August Howard, fundador de la Sociedad Polar Americana y editor del Polar Times. Promontorio alto de cima plana, cubierto de nieve, que separa las ensenadas Lamplugh y Odom, en la costa E de la península Tierra de O'Higgins.
