Photographed from the air by RARE in 1947, roughly mapped from photographs by FIDS in 1960; mapped by USGS from USN air photography of 1967-68 and satellite imagery of 1972-73. Named after Joseph E. Bennett, Head of Polar Coordination and Information, Division of Polar Programs, NSF, 1976-86 (USA gaz.1989; GBR gaz.1993).
