The N entrance was roughly charted by FAE, 1908-10, in January 1910 (Charcot, 1912, P1. 1) and described as "a vast estuary encumbered by ice" (Bongrain, 1914, vue 44 following p.60); seen from the air by Wilkins, 29 December 1929, during the flight in which he established the insularity of Charcot Island (q.v.), and sketched from the air in c.70°30'S 72°00'W by USAS, November-December 1940; named Wilkins Strait after Sir Hubert Wilkins (Wilkins Coast, (q.v.) (USAAF chart [LR-74], 1942; Ronne, 1945, map p.14). Estrecho Wilkins (Argentina. IGM map, 1946; Chile. IHA, 1974, p.302). Wilkins Str. (Hansen, chart [no number], 1947).
