Named for Sir Edmund Hillary, the Himalayan and Antarctic explorer who led the New Zealand Party of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition (CTAE). The various New Zealand parties which carried out detailed surveys of different parts of this area added greatly to the knowledge of the region. The Skelton and Darwin Glacier routes to the Polar Plateau both of which were pioneered by New Zealand Parties, lie in this area.
