A very prominent mountain about 150 km south-east of Magga Peak, in Oates Land. It is the highest mountain visible from the sea and appears as a snow-covered, glistening peak, shaped like the base of a flat-iron, inland behind the coastal ranges. The mountain appears amongst other mountains on air photos taken by USN Operation Highjump (1946). Sighted by Phillip Law, ANARE 1961 on the MV Magga Dan. Fixed by angles from the ship. Named after Senator J G Gorton, Minister Assisting the Australian Minister for External Affairs, 1960-64.
