Small lake, c. 255 m in diameter, formed by volcanic activity 1967-69, 0.25 km NE of Stancomb Cove, Deception Island. Named after Commander Giovanni Ajmone Cat, (1934 - 2007), Commander, Italian merchant navy. He led expeditions to Antarctica (1969-71 and 1973-74) aboard his 34 ton felucca, San Giuseppe II, which he had designed himself and had built near Naples, Italy. Subsequently awarded the Italian Gold Medal of Military Valour, Medaglia d"oro al Valore Militare, 1972. Cmdr. Ajmone Cat sailed into Stancomb Cove in 1969, after the volcanic eruption. (APC 2009).
