A small round lake, c. 255 meters in diameter, formed by volcanic activity 1967-69, 0.25 kilometers NE of Stancomb Cove, Deception Island. Named by the Italian Committee for Antarctic Geographical Names after Commander Giovanni Ajmone Cat (1934-2007), Commander, Italian merchant navy. He led expeditions to Antarctica (1969-71 and 1973-74) aboard his 34 ton felucca, San Guiseppe II, which he had designed himself and had built near Naples, Italy. Commander Ajmone Cat sailed into Stancomb Cove in 1969, after the volcanic eruption. Ajmone Cat is the full family name/surname of the individual in question, but Ajmonecat Lake has been recommended to conform with the spelling form advanced by the proponents of the name.
