Mapped by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and U.S. Navy tricamera aerial photography, 1957-62. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Garrett A. Hughes, U.S. Antarctic Research Program (USARP) researcher (cosmic radiation) at McMurdo Station in 1966.
