La entrada SW a este canal, fue descubierta por el comandante Eduard Dallmann, jefe de la Expedición Alemana de 1873-1874, quien le dio el nombre de canal Roosen. La Expedición Belga de 1897-1899, dirigida por el teniente Adrien de Gerlache, navegó a través del canal y le dio el nombre de George von Neumayer. El segundo nombre ha sido aceptado por el Comité Consultor de Nombres Antárticos de EE.UU., debido a su uso más generalizado.
