Narrative

extending SSE 60km into Larsen Ice Shelf and dividing Oscar II Coast from Foyn Coast, was seen from the air by RARE on 22 December 1947 and called Flint Peninsula after R.F. Flint (Flint Glacier, q.v.) (Ronne, 1949, map p.230 and end map); surveyed from the ground by FIDS from "Hope Bay" in 1947; in association with the names in this area of members of the War Cabinet responsible for Operation "Tabarin" in 1943, named after The Rt Hon. Winston Leonard Spencer (later Sir Winston) Churchill (1874-1965), English statesman; Prime Minister, First Lord of the Treasury, Minister of Defence and Leader of the War Cabinet, 1940-45; Prime Minister, 1951-55; Nobel Laureate for literature, 1953 (BA chart 3570, 27.vi.1952; APC, 1955, p.7; DCS 601 sheet 66 62, 1955).Pen¡nsula Ameghino, after F. Ameghino (Longing Gap, q.v.) (Argentina. MM, 1953, p.325). Flint-Halbinsel, Foyn-Halbinsel (Kosack, 1955a, p.221, end map). Pen¡nsula Churchill (Argentina. MM chart 110, 1957; Chile. IHA, 1974, p.76). Poloostrov Foynv (Bártl, 1958, map facing p.144). Poluostrov Cherchill (Soviet Union. MMF chart, 1961). Pen¡nsula Suecia [=Sweden peninsula], in reference to SwAE (Argentina. MM chart 110, 1963). An Argentine refuge hut called "Santa Teresita" was established at the N end of the peninsula in September 1963 (Argentina. IAA, 1965, p.416).
