This name originates from Australia. It is part of the Australian Antarctic Gazetteer and the SCAR Composite Gazetteer of Antarctica.
Named after Gus Williams, Chief Steward on the Aurora's Macquarie Island Voyage and Second and Third Antarctic Voyages. Williams joined the Aurora, signing on as Second Steward on 29th August 1912. He was promoted to Chief Steward on the 8th of October, prior to departure for Macquarie Island and on return he was retained for the Commonwealth Bay voyage, returning to Australia on 15th March 1913. He requested to stay on with the Aurora, and his request was granted on 12th April on condition that he provided his own food and participated in the refurbishing duties while the vessel was docked at Williamstown, Victoria. This he did, painting much of the interior of the vessel and carrying out pumping work when required. On 12th September 1913 he was recommissioned as Chief Steward for the third Antarctic voyage and was paid off at the completion of the journey, on 19th March 1914. As Chief Steward he was responsible for the provisioning of the vessel and for overseeing the catering for the three voyages as well as maintaining the various messes and the accommodation for the scientists and officers. He was, therefore, one of the 'unsung heroes' of the Aurora.
