Changeover HI, establish Mawson
This voyage established Mawson station on the coast of Mac Robertson Land. Mawson was officially opened on 13 Feb 1954. Cargo included two Auster aircraft operated by an RAAF team led by Douglas W Leckie, and 27 huskies bred and trained on Heard Island. Although both aircraft were damaged by a storm on arrival at Mawson on 12 Feb one serviceable aircraft was built, and over 400 km of the coast was surveyed by air. An attempt was made to land on Scullin Monolith. The ship then visited the Vestfold Hills, Princess Elizabeth Land, where magnetic measurements and astronomical fixes were made. A landing was also made at Magnetic Island off the Vestfold Hills and the Australian flag was raised. Kista Dan also called at Heard Island and Iles Kerguelen.
