All scientific data collected by the Australian Antarctic program (AAp) are eventually described in the Catalogue of Australian Antarctic and Subantarctic Metadata (CAASM). CAASM can be used to search through AAp data descriptions, and it also provides links to access publicly available datasets, which can either be immediately downloaded or obtained from the Australian Antarctic Data Centre (AADC).
Marine benthic community data obtained from photoquadrats taken in 1985 (Ellis Fjord) and 1989 (Long Fjord) in the Vestfold Hills. Data includes % cover of biota and substrata, and counts of some taxa, generally larger or individual sessile or mobile species. These data are part of the BEAUT (Biodiversity of East Antarctica - Underwater and Terrestrial) project. See the parent record for more details.
These data are available as an Excel spreadsheet.
Photoquadrats were taken for ecological research, including analysis of community patterns and relationships with environmental variables.
Ellis Fjord survey was led by John Kirkwood, a PhD student at the time.
The Long Fjord survey was led by Atilla Vrana, a tradesperson on station at the time, possibly for Harry Burton, an Antarctic division ecologist.
Image quality varied due to water visibility, light and camera settings. Identifications based on scanned photos and includes morphotaxa where species could not be reliably identified from photos.
These data are not yet publicly available for download.
