All scientific data collected by the Australian Antarctic program (AAp) are eventually described in the Catalogue of Australian Antarctic and Subantarctic Metadata (CAASM). CAASM can be used to search through AAp data descriptions, and it also provides links to access publicly available datasets, which can either be immediately downloaded or obtained from the Australian Antarctic Data Centre (AADC).
Lakes were sampled in the Bunger Hills as part of the Biodiversity of East Antarctica: Underwater and Terrestrial (BEAUT) field program in 2024/2025. For each lake, a series of samples were collected including water (for chemistry) and sediment (for physical parameters, invertebrate eDNA and extraction). A total of 44 lakes were sampled. This dataset includes the lake water chemistry results.
For water chemistry sampling, three bottles were used to collect water samples from each lake. Bottles were sourced from Australian Laboratory Services (ALS).
• Bottle 1: Nutrients – 60 mL plastic bottle (ALS #010), sulfuric acid (0.6 mL) pre-dispensed
• Bottle 2: TOC - 40 mL amber glass vial, sulfuric acid (0.4 mL) pre-dispensed
• Bottle 3: Major ions - 250 mL plastic bottle (#007), unpreserved (ambient)
Access to liquid water was gained using an ice axe if lake was frozen. Bottle 3 was rinsed in lake water and used to fill bottles 1 and 2 to appropriate volume, being careful not to overfill in case of freezing and expansion during transport. Samples were preserved with pre-dispensed acid (if appropriate) and stored ambient at camp.
Samples were sent to ALS for analysis of the following parameters: electrical conductivity, bicarbonate, carbonate, total alkalinity, sulfate, chloride, calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, total N, TP, reactive phosphorus, ionic balance, total anions, total cations, TOC.
To understand lake water chemistry across the Bunger Hills region as a driver of biodiversity.
The data is of good analytical quality.
